NYC is blooming (literally and figuratively!) - you can smell the perfume of flowers mixed with hope in the air. Streets are more vibrant, restaurants are getting fuller and fuller, and there are a lot more fun things to do - such as attending new wonderful art exhibitions.
As a matter of fact, I have just visited the Alice Neels exhibition at The Met - truly a must-see. I'm also planning to go to Yayoi Kusama at Botanical Gardens next weekend.
In terms of fashion, Spring collections are optimistic with different color options for every personal style or complexion. Besides, some new silhouettes such as voluminous dresses and long shirts can be a bit tricky or not exactly your style. But remember: fashion means having options. It's up to you and your preferences!
I am writing this newsletter as I am getting ready to give a masterclass about the Spring collections to Brazilian personal stylists and store owners on Monday. As always, I will be writing about it in my journal. I want to share not only what I am seeing in the stores and how to wear them, but also how to make more use of the clothes you already own. That's the easiest way of having a curated and sustainable wardrobe for you.
In the meantime, check out some posts I wrote about Spring:
Do you love a floral print dress but don't want to invest in a piece that you will be able to wear for a few months? Read this post first. You can wear floral prints from Spring to Fall.
Many of our shoes were forgotten in the closet in the past year, right? Luckily things are better and we can go out more now. Click here if you also love shoes and know how they can update your outfits.
Pleated pants are back! They are a great transition from our favorite WFH sweatpants to finally wearing something office-appropriate. After all, we deserve to go back to the office with comfort and style, right?
SMALL TALK WITH FLAVIA BARKER, FLOWER DESIGNER & OWNER OF GREEN OF GREENWICH IN GREENWICH, CT
MC: We are starting to socialize in small groups again. What do you suggest for simple flower arrangements for lunch in the backyard?
Flavia:The main rule is to keep it simple. The more elements you mix, the harder it is to design. So, start with whatever you can use from your own garden. If you don’t have or don’t wish to cut anything, go to your local florist or Trader Joe’s and choose a color that will coordinate with your table scheme. One type of flower in nice bunches always looks fresh and cheerful!
MC: If we are buying flowers at Trader Joe’s or our go-to deli, how can we make them survive inside the house?
Flavia:Cut flowers last between 4 to 7 days. Alstroemerias and daisies tend to last a bit longer if bought tight. But that’s the beauty of cut flowers, they bring a fresh look, new textures, and colors to the home every time.
MC: Can you share one more tip on how to make the flowers last longer?
Flavia:Change the water every 2 to 3 days (wash the vase especially if the water looks cloudy). Cut the stems about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch every time you change the water. Don’t let the leaves touch the water since that helps to create bacteria. Also, keep it away from direct sunlight.
Flavia has a very charming atelier in Greenwich and provides beautiful flower arrangements for corporate and private events and weekly in-home services for the tri-state area. Check her Instagram @greenofgreenwich
