How to take care of your white clothes

This sequence of events happens a lot: I am working in person with a client just before Spring ends.

We check her Summer wardrobe to come up with different combinations.

As soon as I get ready to suggest some new pieces that she could buy, my client picks up her favorite white dress and I see a big stain on it.

Then I usually hear the same words: "This was not here before, I'm sure."

What happened, then?

She probably wore this dress last year for a couple of hours. It looked clean so she kept it in the closet for the next occasion. But it never came.

Finally, Fall arrived and she forgot about the dress. Perhaps a small drop of white wine or something else fell on it. At that time, it was imperceptible, but after a few months, it became visible and bigger.

To avoid this scenario, I suggest you take proper care of your white clothes whenever lower temperatures show up. Here's what you can do:

  • Even if you have worn your white clothes only once, send them to the dry cleaners or wash them at home. Make sure to follow the instructions on the label.

  • If you send your pieces to the dry cleaners, pay attention to them on the way back. Remove the plastic cover and the wire hanger first thing when you arrive home. They don't protect your clothes for the months to come. They are meant just for transportation. Both the plastic cover and those skinny iron hangers are bad for your beautiful clothes.

  • If you do need to cover it for some reason, look for a breathable garment bag. It's easy to find it on Amazon or at The Container Store.

  • If you are washing your clothes at home, my suggestion is to use The Laundress products: Whites Detergent and the All-purpose Bleach Alternative. They work very well for me. They also have the Stain Bar that is great for spot cleaning on dry clean only clothes.

Remember that showing some extra love to your clothes will make them last longer, which is sustainable as well!
