Where should I invest my money for my Fall wardrobe?

Is it time to start talking about Fall yet?

Labor Day weekend is coming up and we all know what happens in September, right? Here in NY, we start to notice that a new season is in the air.

So, where should you invest your money for your autumnal wardrobe?

There isn't a simple answer to this question. You already know I'm not a fan of those magazine must-have lists that supposedly work for everyone.

Basically, it depends on your personal style and lifestyle.

You need to consider your job's dress code, what you already own, and your professional plans for next semester.

For instance, some people were ready to go back to the office but many companies postponed their return for next year. This uncertainty will definitely impact your shopping decisions.

Start with an action plan:

  • Think of your current situation and open your wardrobe. Then, check your transitional Summer to Fall pieces such as light jackets, pairs of jeans, tailored pants, or light sweaters. Do you need to take them to the laundry or dry cleaners? Perhaps you need to replace your favorite sweater. Finally, look at your shoes and boots. Do they need a visit to the cobbler? Get everything ready before the chilly weather is here.

  • Make a list of things you need and want. Go to online stores or your local boutiques. Be mindful of your budget.

Where should you spend money for Fall?

  • After the steps above, you will know your favorite items and what worked in the past. A formula I strongly believe in is that the more you wear something, the more you can invest in it. You can buy high-quality denim pants if you wear them a lot. This way the cost per wear is diluted. However, if you have a strict budget and don't wear jeans often, I recommend looking for them at outlet stores or waiting for sales.

  • If you need new tailored pants, there are plenty of options at different price points now. Again, pay attention to the cost per wear and your finances.

  • Wearing a third piece is always a good investment. Blazers and jackets elevate your outfit, get you immediately ready for an unexpected Zoom call, and can be paired with jeans and sneakers. They are cool and ageless!

  • Good shoes matter! Fall asks for nice boots. Think about versatility and comfort. Buy boots that you can wear both on workdays and weekends.

  • A prime cashmere sweater is extremely cozy for Fall, especially when we work from home.
