What to wear for a job interview via Zoom

Working from home has become a reality for a lot of people.

In fact, I’ve been talking about the WFH dress code since March 2020. That’s when I wrote the “How To Dress When Working From Home” guide. By the way, it’s free and you can download it here.

Almost a year later and many people are still hustling from their home offices, whether it is attending meetings, presenting reports, or, more importantly: applying for a new position to move up on their career ladder.

That's why I’m getting requests to talk even more about WFH outfits. After all, a job interview is not just a normal daily meeting where you can wear your old go-to blouse. We really need to make a good first impression!

Take into account that the dress code can vary according to the job and the company you are applying for. Remember that a third piece (jacket, blazer, cardigan) always elevates the outfit.

Besides, colors are crucial here. You will be seen from the chest up, but emergencies can happen. Be prepared in case you might need to stand up. Just this time, forget your comfy leggings and wear real pants instead.

Here are my do's and don’ts so you can look amazing on your online interview:

What to avoid:

  1. Solid black (it can make under-eye bags & double chins look pronounced since it creates shadows, you can appear larger as you lose any depth/definition);

  2. Solid white (it makes it hard for the camera to balance exposure);

  3. Small repeating patterns (geometric and patterns such as stripes, houndstooth, plaids, and zig-zags/chevrons all tend to move for the viewer and make it uncomfortable to look at you).

  4. Shiny fabrics (they shimmer every time you move and draw attention to lumps and bumps);

  5. Pastels (these colors just don’t show up as well on camera);

  6. Chunky earrings that move while you are talking (they can be distracting);

  7. Colors matching your background!

Instead, go for:

  1. Solid richer colors like this palette attached – these really help you to be noticed. Not sure which colors look best on you? DM me if you’d like your own color analysis for colors on top, in-person, or virtually, and I’ll send you personal recommendations;

  2. Small to medium earrings and/or short necklaces (the ones that can be seen on the camera).
