Women over 40: are there any rules on what not to wear?

A couple of weeks ago, I went live on Instagram with Kelly Tavora, a fellow stylist based in The UK.

The theme of our chat was Style for Women over 40s. We received so many relevant questions that I decided to write a series of posts about this topic.

The first question was about what not to wear after turning 40 years old.

This is a common doubt. My answer was that I don't believe in any rules you read in magazines, on TV, or on social media... The more we know about our personal style, priorities, lifestyle, and what we want to enhance or camouflage in our bodies, the better choices we can make.

Here are some specific points we discussed:

  • Mini-skirts:

We have been seeing a comeback of mini-skirts in the past seasons, although they are not predominant in stores, and women in general still prefer the midi length nowadays.

For middle-aged women, I feel that it depends on how comfortable they feel wearing mini-skirts. With few exceptions, I would advise wearing not too short, or too fitted.

Avoid very high heels, as well. As some people say, this won't show that you are trying too hard.

Instead, look for A-line skirts. Pair them with a long-sleeved shirt (show more on the bottom, and less on the top), lower heels with tights in the Fall-Winter, or flat sandals in the Summer.

Remember: Those are just ideas for you to try. They aren't rules, OK?

  • Flashing prints:

This totally depends on your personal style. Do you like wearing prints? Do the colors flatter your complexion? Is it a good pattern for a shirt? Do you prefer it bigger or smaller? If you're still in doubt, try it on with a scarf.

  • High heels:

Again, it's up to you! Are you into high heels? Do you feel comfortable in them? Then, go for it!

In general, women start to think more about comfort as they age. I believe this is also related to confidence. The good news is that we can find super stylish shoes with low heels nowadays - something that didn't happen years ago.

Personally, I love high heels! As long as they don't hurt me, I'll keep wearing them. However, I have to confess that I'm super picky about brands when I purchase new shoes. I don't need many, but I need high-quality ones.

  • Color blocking:

Combining two or more colors depends on your personal style, too. Choose the best colors for your complexion to wear on the top. Showing a bit of our personality in the way we dress is so important!

I have many other interesting ideas about styling clothes for women over 40. I will be sharing them in the following weeks.
