Two speaking opportunities: let's talk about personal style and gray hair

This past week, I had the opportunity to talk at two events.

The first, at Ornare, in Greenwich, was hosted by two cool brands: Gavea NYC and Fabiana Mortari Jewelry. One company is based in NYC and creates fun and timeless sweaters. The other sells statement jewelry.

I chatted with a group of women about the importance of knowing our style. This way, we have a cohesive wardrobe, shop better, and feel free to say no to trends we don't like.

When I have a discovery call with a prospective client, I frequently hear phrases such as: "I don't have a style" or "I used to have a style, but I don't have it anymore." That's my starting point - I give them exercises, such as creating a mood board and answering a questionnaire. Then, we schedule a call so I can give them feedback based on their homework.

The second event was a big one, the 2023 Booming Better Expo. It's a mix of exhibitions and talks about different subjects for people who are 55 and older.

My presentation was the last of the day. For the first four hours, I was networking with the participants (mostly women). Since I was going to talk about colors, I imagined that gray hair would be something that they would find captivating. Bingo! I was right. It was a nonstop conversation.

See below the questions that I got the most from women who still dye their hair:

  • How do I know the right moment to stop dying my hair?

  • How do I know if my gray hair will be beautiful or look good on me?

  • How can we make the transition without feeling awful?

Here are my pieces of advice:

  • It's your decision, not your partner's, kids', or hairdresser's. When you make up your mind, you will be comfortable. Additionally, you can always change your hair color again.

  • Have your color analysis done. Once you know your best colors and your new contrast (yes, your natural contrast will change!), you will understand the tweaks you can do with your makeup, accessories, and color combinations.

  • If you had a color analysis done decades ago, like many of the attendants at the event, it's time to redo it. Nobody talked about gray hair at that time. Finally, I have tools to help you understand the change in your contrast.

  • Have a hairdresser who is willing to help you.

What about you? Have you ever thought about going gray? It's not only an aging discussion. I have clients in their 30s who have happily embraced their silver strands.
