How to update your wardrobe for the season
We know a new season is about to start when we feel the weather changing.
But also when we see stores bringing new collections.
That's when we go window shopping (virtually or physically) and think about whether or not we should add new clothes to our wardrobe.
How do you decide what to buy?
Sometimes the new silhouettes are not your favorite or your style. For instance, dresses are generally more voluminous and you aren't sure you like them.
So, how do you know if it is a good purchase?
Here are my tips on how to decide to buy for this Spring-Summer:
1. First of all, the most important step: Think about what you really like and what fits your lifestyle.
How do you want to look? More feminine, elegant, classic yet modern?
Not all trends are made for us. But this is actually a good thing.
I suggest you create a Pinterest board with outfits that you like and clothes that are in the stores right now. Then, take a look at the pictures you have pinned.
What do you see in common?
It's what we call your personal style. Having an idea of what your interests are will help you avoid impulsive purchases.
2. Wanna try something new but aren't sure if you will like it?
It's great to take risks. However, don't spend too much money doing so.
Always look for good fitting and don't skip a visit to your local tailor if necessary.
3. Never buy anything that can't be returned or exchanged.
Trying on clothes at a store can be fun, but it's vital that you do the same at home with your own clothes and accessories.
Take time to decide if it was an amazing acquisition or if it was something that only made you happy at the store.
4. Do your job first.
This is the best time of the year for some wardrobe cleaning. Try to keep only the items you like and that fit your lifestyle and image goals.
Since we had an unusual year, it's also great timing to evaluate what clothes should be stored, recycled, or donated.
5. Do research.
Check your favorite physical and online stores before going on a spending spree.
What are the pieces that you like the most? What are the new silhouettes that would suit you? What is missing in your wardrobe?
Think first, purchase later.
6. Any Summer plans ahead?
Are you going on a road trip to the beach? Getting away to the mountains? Are you staying in the city? What do you really need for your upcoming trips?
Planning is extremely important to avoid impulse buying.
A QUICK BUT VERY USEFUL EXAMPLE:
You are going to a beach town and plan to wear shorts. The ones you have are either too short, tight, or low rise - a trend that's not really current or doesn't fit your image goals.
You want to buy a new pair of high-waisted denim shorts that aren't too short or tight. If you'll wear them only for this trip, you probably shouldn't invest a lot in denim shorts. But if you really insist, try to find a price that is reasonable for your budget.
If you're in doubt about fitting, order them in two different sizes. Try them on as many times it's necessary. Pair them with your own shirts and shoes. Now, you are ready to make a decision!
Remember: buying online is like taking your clothes to a fitting room. The only difference is that your home is the best fitting room in the world!
