As a personal stylist, it's very common for me to find stained clothes on my client’s closets, especially on those garments that they don’t wear on a daily basis.

It happens all the time: I am doing a closet consultation at a client’s house, we are checking out Summer clothes for an upcoming trip and there it is: a huge yellow stain on a beautiful white dress. The client gets surprised and says she has no idea where the mark came from!

The reason why it happens is because sometimes we wear a piece of clothing briefly, then we put it back in the closet thinking we'll wear it once more before the Summer ends - but it never really happens. We either forget it exists or it looks clean - we don't realize it has a spot on it. 

Fun fact: a small, invisible white wine or sunscreen drop can become a huge yellowish stain after weeks, or even months! 

That's why I want to share two useful advices on how to avoid stains on your Summer clothes!

1. Wash your clothes before putting THEN back in the closet

If the season is changing and you know you won't wear a piece of clothing for months, especially the white ones, I recommend you to wash it at home or send it to the dry cleaning before putting it back in the closet.

It will save you from the disappointment of seeing a stain on your favorite piece!

2. Wash your clothes at home

In fact, I only send to the dry cleaners what is absolutely necessary such as blazers, coats and lined dresses.

So if you also do the laundry at home, I'm going to share a tip that I usually just tell my clients: get The Laundress products - I use them myself!

My go-to products are: Stain Solution, All-Purpose Bleach Alternative and their brush!

• A stain on some fabric types, like cotton or linen, can be removed with a mix of the Stain Solution and the All-Purpose Bleach Alternative by adding warm water.

• For spot cleaning of a dry clean-only blazer, for example, their Wash and Stain Bar works fine!

They also have great videos with tutorials on their website showing how these items work. I can guarantee that it's a straightforward process!

If you send your clothes to the dry cleaner, here is a pro tip: the plastic laundry bag is essential to protect the garment. However, remove the plastic once you throw it in your closet so the fabric can breathe.

Last but not least: the dry cleaner hanger can damage your clothes, so switch to your hanger.
