How to match shoes, bags, and belts

A client recently asked me how to match shoes, bags, and belts. This is a common question that many people have.

How can we make sure our bag goes well with shoes?

When fashion dictated that shoes and bags needed to coordinate the same color and material, it was easier to decide what to wear. Black patent leather shoes would only go with a black patent leather bag.

However, this matchy-matchy rule became not only unnecessary but also outdated. This also means it became even harder to create perfect combinations.

Here is my advice:

  • Shoes and bags don't need to have the same color or material but find a way to connect them. For instance, putting casual and more formal pieces together.

A summer bag made of straw and light brown leather isn't the best pair for high-heel pumps. I suggest choosing sandals or sneakers (depending on the outfit) and a leather belt.

  • For colors, first take into consideration what you're wearing. If you are wearing light clothes and shoes, avoid a black bag. It will look incoherent. This happens when you only wear one black item. To make it work, add a second element in black, such as a belt.

  • Play with colors. Why don't you match a colored belt with a neutral bag and pair of shoes?
