How to buy high-quality cashmere
Cashmere sweaters became popular because they are warm and soft. Many popular brands have cashmere products.
But why can a cashmere product range from $50 to $2000?
There are many reasons why these items can vary so much in price. Keep reading to learn about how to buy high-quality cashmere:
Cashmere is a type of wool that comes from goats. The name derives from the word "Kashmir", a region in the north of India that was known because of their production. Nowadays, Mongolia and Nepal are among the best producers of this material.
Cashmere is finer, stronger and softer than wool. Once I heard an expert say that there are two main factors to make the finest yarn: the altitude where the goats live as well as their health.
Therefore, what impacts the price is yarn quality, where it's made, the number of products purchased by the brand, and the markup.
On the other hand, length and thickness of the fibers influence its durability. Shorter fibers cause more pilling - this also happens with wool. Nowadays, the brands tend to use a mix of different quality yarns, so it balances quality, and subsequently, the final price.
Many of the cashmere sweaters found in stores these days are blended: partly made of cashmere, wool, or even acrylic. That’s why I advise my clients to always read labels before purchasing any clothes. There are many brands using recycled cashmere that are made from scraps of fabrics previously woven or felted, that were used (or not) by previous consumers.
Personally, I love a cashmere sweater, it's so warm and cozy! I have a few from different price points (I constantly look for sales), but I swear to you that taking good care of them is crucial to make these pieces last longer. I suggest you take a look at how I take care of my cashmere sweaters post. Actually, now that I think about it, it's the same way I take care of any sweater I have.
