Get Your Wardrobe Spring-Ready

On the first day of Spring, March 20th, I went live on Instagram with Camilla Frederico, a personal organizer. We talked about how to prepare your wardrobe for the new season—practical, easy tips to help you make space and feel more organized.

Here are some of the tips we shared:

  • Start with Decluttering

As Camilla said (and I completely agree):
"We can have the fanciest bins and boxes, but if we don’t remove what we don’t love or want to wear, our closets will never truly feel organized."

  • Wash Before You Store

Before packing your sweaters, ensure they’re clean—even if you only wore them once. That invisible drop of white wine? It could become a stain by next fall!
I have a blog post on how I hand wash my wool and cashmere pieces, which is worth checking out.
Also, remove pilling with a sweater comb or fabric shaver. Your knits will be fresh and ready when you need them.

  • Protect Your Knits

Add sachets or cedar blocks to your storage bins or drawers to avoid moth damage (which is more common than you’d think!).
And always fold knits—wool, cashmere, or cotton—never hang them.

  • Prep Your Winter Boots

We had a lot of snow this year, and salt from the streets can stain your shoes, pants, and coats.
Before storing boots, clean them well and check if they need to be taken to the cobbler to replace the outsole.
Camilla recommends storing boots in a box with inserts to help them keep their shape.

  • Coats & Dry Cleaning Tips

Store coats and winter items in cotton garment bags, not just plastic ones.
And please toss the dry cleaner’s hangers! They’re meant for transport only, not for long-term use.

  • Not Sure What to Store Yet?

I get this question a lot!
Because it’s still chilly in early spring, I begin by putting away my heaviest sweaters, snow boots, and puff coat.
I usually start around early April. I also made a list:

  • What still needs hand washing (like sweaters)

  • What goes to the dry cleaner (like coats)

  • What needs repair (one pair of boots needs some love—I'll wait until mid-April for that!)

  • Why We Went Live

Camilla and I wanted to share practical tips to help you spring-clean your wardrobe without stress. She’s also offering 10% off a Spring Organization Session until the end of the season!

* In this post written some years ago, I mentioned that The Laundress did a recall of its products because of bacteria. However, they solved their problem in the factory and returned the money to the clients. I loved their products for wool & cashmere, so I started to use them again.
