Fashion in times of a pandemic
Does it make sense to talk about fashion or style in times of a pandemic?
I have been debating internally over this topic for the past weeks. As a coincidence, I got an email that addressed exactly what I was thinking. It was from a brand I am a customer of and always recommend to my clients: Cuyana.
This eco-conscious womenswear brand was founded by two female entrepreneurs who always discuss the importance of having fewer yet better things. They create collections with items that are a foundation of a good wardrobe, not too focused on fashion but staying current without being too trendy. Amazing, right?!
SLOW LIVING IS THE ANSWER
But like any other retail company, they are struggling to stay in business right now. In fact, they were the first ones to send a letter to the customers talking openly about this issue - well, at least it was the first one I have received or heard about.
They decided they would launch less products than previously planned and that they will talk more about “slow living” rather than keep trying to make sales in every email.
Doesn’t it sound beautiful?
Many of us are feeling that we are in a slow living mode at the moment. Actually I think we should all allow ourselves to slow down a bit. It’s too much effort to keep our spirits up nowadays.
FASHION BUT NOT FRIVOLOUS
So how can we talk about fashion or style without looking frivolous with so many horrible things happening?
As a personal stylist, I started to think about my clients. A great number of women are now working from home, maybe even with their kids around. They want to feel confident to show up at video calls while at the same time they are tired and worried. I believe that if these clients start to get dressed to work like they used to, they will eventually feel more in charge and ready to do their job, for the reason that this is just human.
DOING MY PART IN THIS TOUGH TIME
We expect this to be over, we trust this will happen. Meanwhile we are all still stuck at home, and I decided to do two things to help my clients out:
First, I released the freebie “How to dress when working from home”.
And then I started to share my outfits online every day. What I have been doing is simple but fun and engaging: I am taking photos of how I personally dress to work from home lately and I am adding them to a Pinterest board called “Daily Flare” as well as posting them on my Instagram stories. In that manner, I expect to have the ability to inspire my clients to feel better, just like Cuyana did to me with their brave letter.
Stay safe and don’t forget that I am here to help you.
