7 misconceptions about hiring a personal stylist

I know there are a lot of misconceptions about hiring a personal stylist or their work.

I hear them all the time!

That's why I decided to talk about seven of these wrong ideas including my own personal experience with my clients.

I hope this article will be able to clarify what a personal stylist's work is actually like and even motivate more people to try some styling services!

1. "It's only for rich people or celebrities because it's expensive"

There are many stylists that work with celebrities, but the truth is that the majority doesn’t - myself included.

I work with real women, with real lives and a real wardrobe.

What I want to say is that these women don't have borrowed or free clothes and usually have a reasonable budget.

That’s exactly why everything that my clients have in their wardrobe must fit their lifestyles.

They need to know many ways of wearing the clothes they own.

Not to mention that this service costs less than you imagine!

2. "It's only for fashionistas or people that dress up"

Usually women who are into fashion, love to shop or follow the latest trends don’t look for a personal stylist - unless they're celebrities.

My clients' profile are busy women who have other priorities in life than actually keeping up with the fashion world.

They aren't really interested in trends.

As a matter of fact, some of them even hate to go shopping!

However, they want to be confident and have an up to date closet.

Most of the time, you can achieve this with some good styling advice and a few additions to your dresser every year.

3. "Personal stylists will say that all your clothes must go!"

This is just on TV shows!

In reality, I try to make the most use of what my clients have in their homes.

What I might do is suggest some alterations or different ways of styling since it's more sustainable and less costly!

But doing some cleaning is also important because once you open your wardrobe and see only clothes that you love and know how to wear, your mornings will be less stressful. I promise you!

4. "Personal stylists will advise you to dress exactly as them"

As an experienced professional, I can tell you that stylists are trained to see clients as different people, with unique personal styles and needs. If it doesn’t work that way, it's wrong.

5. "It's a superficial and frivolous"

Our job is not only about clothes and accessories.

It's about understanding your style, your way of living, your body changes, your image goals.

It should boost your confidence and empower you. This is not frivolous at all!

6. "Personal stylists will make a list of the season's must have items that you need to buy"

I never liked these must-have lists or seasons' essentials.

I always say that I never wanted a trench coat when I lived in Rio de Janeiro, Puerto Rico, Mexico or Singapore. It made no sense given the high temperatures all year round.

But here in NY I have one. I wear it a lot when it rains or as a transitional weather coat.

One more example: although I do love a crisp white shirt, I know it's not for someone with small kids, or who doesn’t want to iron it or send it to the dry cleaner's.

See? I just gave you two examples of items that you'll most likely find in every must have list.

In my opinion, just forget about these imposed conventions. I believe that you need to have your own list. And I can help you with it.

7. "The membership boxes created mostly by algorithms can substitute a personal stylist"

In case you haven't heard, people who hate to go shopping but still want to look nice and appropriate are joining box membership programs.

Here is how it works: you get 5 pieces of clothes. If you keep all of them, you can get a discount.

I know, at first, you would think this is a great deal.

But then you'll realize that it didn’t really solve your problem. In the end you're just accumulating more clothes and you still aren't sure if they fit you well or you have no idea how to incorporate the new items to your existing closet.

I have heard this a lot from my clients.

These programs are inexpensive but they can't understand you completely as a person, your wardrobe and your lifestyle.
