3 ways to start a sustainable wardrobe

Here's a question I often get: "Is it possible to have a sustainable wardrobe if I am on a budget?".

The answer, of course, is yes!

We all know that brands that promote sustainability tend to have a higher price point. However, many others, including some fast fashion ones, are setting goals to be more environmentally friendly.

For instance, they are trying to offer more products with organic cotton, recycled fabrics, or even waste less water while manufacturing denim (in case you didn't know, it takes hundreds of gallons of water to make a single pair of jeans).

So how can you start a sustainable wardrobe without breaking the bank?

Well, I have three suggestions for you.

1. TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR CLOTHES TO MAKE THEM LAST.

This is the most important tip of all!

It doesn’t matter how much you paid for your clothes or where you bought them. You already own them, so do everything you can to prolong their lifetime.

How? It's simple. Just don’t forget to read the instructions that come on their tags.

2. UPCYCLE YOUR CLOTHES.

Remember to repurpose a product you've had for a long time.

You can turn a dress into a skirt, recycle old bootcut jeans into a pair of cropped jeans, or just change the buttons of a coat and make it look brand new for this Fall.

3. REPAIR WHAT YOU HAVE!

Sending your boots to the cobbler or removing the pilings on your sweaters are examples of repairing and taking proper care of your pieces.

And the best time to do it is now before the cold weather is really here and you'll need to wear them! Don't give up on an item that you like.

Which of these three tips are you looking forward to trying? Let me know in the comments!

When I work with a client, I make the most use of their clothes. Together, we build as many different outfits as possible to multiply their closets. Sounds fun?
